 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation: [se' 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995), also known as Selena, is a famous American Tejano singer. The name was coined for her as"the "Queen of Tejano music" Her contribution to fashion and music helped make her one of most well-known Mexican-American entertainers in the last decade of the 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists" basing their selection on Latin albums and Latin songs charts. Because of her clothing choices, media outlets called her the Tejano Madonna. She is also regarded as one of the most popular Latin artists ever and is widely credited with propelling the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest child of the Quintanilla family, she debuted on the scene of music as part of the group Selena y Los Dinos, which also included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. Her reputation was frequently discredited in the 1980s and refused bookings at Texas venues for her performance of Tejano music, which is a largely male-dominated genre. Her popularity increased when she won the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist of the year in 1987. She won it nine times. In 1989 she signed with EMI Latin and released her debut album titled Entre a Mi Mundo (1992). Her brother was her chief music producer and writer. Entre a Mi Mundo was a top-ranked album on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts for eight consecutive months. Critics called it the "breakthrough record" of her musical career because of its commercial popularity. One of the singles, "Como la Flor" was a smash and became her signature tune. Live! Live! In 1994, she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the most popular Latin albums sold in the United States. It was critically acclaimed as being the catalyst for Tejano music's first period of commercialization as it became one of the most popular Latin music subgenres at the time.
