She is the daughter of Harvey Welker a Native American father and Julie Welker an African-American mother. Her father is an engineering while her mother works as an estate agent. Walker was a student at her school at the Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia's Germantown and graduated with a diploma in 1994. In 1998, she earned a bachelor's of arts qualification in the field of education at Harvard College.
